Born and raised in Istanbul, where I attended French high school St Michel before moving to Nice, France for my university studies. After writing my thesis about differences in marketing between Hollywood and the French cinema industry and getting my masters in Communication, Arts and Languages, I moved back to Turkey and found work in a music recording studio. After some months there, I was offered a job as production assistant in a commercial production and that is when my career in film production started.
During my years in the sector I have had many different roles; production assistant, 2nd AD, 1st AD, production coordinator, script assistant, DA, location manager, post-production responsible etc. Since in Turkey the assistant director begins the project during the early pre-production phase, I have had the possibility to work for more than 50 commercials from the very beginning to the end, for most of them, including the post-production phase.
I’ve had the chance to work with many brilliant people from all around the world; crew members, DOPs, directors from India to Serbia to England, and had the opportunity to work for several international productions.
Having started film production work when 35mm was still dominating the market, I got used to very high discipline sets and efficiency.
As an assistant director I believe in a respectful and positive work environment, but this does not mean that I give up my authority on set. Efficiency and respect are on the top of my priority list. Working with people from various different backgrounds and countries, I have learned that stress and constant conflicts are the enemy of efficiency. Sets can make a stressful work environment, and the first AD’s most important role is to make sure crew members can perform at max capacity by helping them communicate, shielding them from other problems that can occur and create an ambiance that encourages people to want to be their best.
I believe that film roll captures not only what is in front of the camera, but also the mood behind it.
